Interactive Gallery: La,La,La, A personal Snapshot of life

The National Museum of Korean Contemporary History opened an experience center by reopening its permanent exhibition. The Experience Center is an experiential exhibition hall where you can personally experience the modern history of Korea under the theme of “generational communication.” Each event that extends from a thick stem of history to a period has different perspectives, experiences, and impacts depending on the person who lived in that period. We experience events that penetrate the times and indirectly feel the perspectives of different generations through exhibitions.

When visitors enter the experience center, they will be reborn as five generations of Koreans who have lived through turbulent times. ‘Haebangdungi’ are the liberated children who were born near the end of the Japanese colonial era, around 1945, and lived through the Korean War. ‘The baby boomers’ were born during a period when the birth rate increased dramatically following the Korean War. ‘The 86th generation’ led the democratization movement as students. As a generation that lived through the IMF economic crisis during college entrance or first employment, ‘the IMF generation’ experienced job insecurity and employment difficulties. ‘Millennials’ are relentless in their use of social networking services to express themselves. We recognize and look at differences in perspectives of each other while experiencing events in living history and culture that penetrate the times, breaking down the barrier of time between generations.

With Walk the Square is a virtual plaza that brings together the plazas that have been the stage for major events in Republic of Korea modern history. Visitors create their own avatars at the kiosk in front of the media wall. Visitors decorate their avatars with clothes, hairstyles, and accessories that symbolize five generations of Korean modern history. Then choose what action to take and enter the virtual plaza. My avatar walks through the virtual plaza, listens to various stories from Korean modern history, and visits the places.

La,la,la
Popular songs that gripped the nation, grassroots activist songs full of generational sentiments, or even songs handed down as an oral tradition—the melodies in our heads can be enjoyed as a rhythm game. To match the rhythm of the chosen song, step into the circle marked on the floor. It’s possible that you’ll start dancing on your own. Forget your everyday worries and cares, for a moment while you sing and dance.

A personal Snapshot of Life
A personal Snapshot of Life is a photo media that take a picture by selecting the scene from the 10 events of each generation among the contents of the Interactive Gallery. Audiences select events that they have personally experienced among the events that have occurred in Korean modern history. Audiences take pictures with scenes from each event expressed like a cartoon. Then the audience’s appearance also changes like a cartoon character and is included in the history. Audiences can print out and keep their photos.
